They always say the best places are hidden.. Edo Sushi is no exception to that.
Back story - I was walking around the Fargate area in Sheffield city and came across a sushi board on the edge of the path. It was pointing down a fairly narrow lane off the main road - I was intrigued to say the least, because, well, I am a sushi addict . I went down the lane to check it out and came across a small door framed by white with a menu to side and an 'Edo Sushi' sign above.. I thought I was missing something, I don't quite know why. There were no windows, nothing to quite spell out there was a restaurant or anything like that. I didn't quite brave it in that time.. big mistake.
Later that afternoon some google'ing to see what this place was about pulled up some really top-notch reviews. Chef trained in Tokyo.. check. People travelling all the way from Doncaster for sushi.. check. So, guess who headed back the next day.. yours truly.
My general rule of thumb with sushi is "go sushi or go home", like, go hard. Order something unusual, not something readily available every where. Edo Sushi, again, not being an exception.

I strolled down the lane and went in the door this time. Inside was one of the tiniest spaces I have been in - there was probably only five steps between the door and the counter. I took a look at the menu - queue an order for the 'Godzilla' (£6) and 'Rainbow' (£4) roll. I chatted with the chap at the counter who began preparing my order straight away. In a space comparable to that of a corridor, they freshly prepare your order in front of you with minimal fuss.. and space, to be honest. A little linear fridge sits on top the counter with plates of cool sashimi slices from salmon, tuna and eel. While it takes a couple of minutes to prepare, you don't particularly mind waiting as you can see your roll being made in front of your very eyes. Each ball of rice, each slice of fish, moulded together with such care. What he puts together looks like a piece of art.. delicious art at that. With effectively only a waiting bench being able to fit in the shop I headed off outside happily with my box of sushi to find a seat and get stuck in.

The 'Godzilla' and 'Rainbow' rolls sat packed neatly in the "traditional" plastic sushi boxes of the modern day, joined by the ever familiar wasabi and pieces of pickled ginger. The 'Godzilla' roll consisted of grilled eel layered upon a prawn tempura and spring onion roll, topped with a dollop Tobiko scattered across. Each bite was jam packed, warming, and with a sweet/salty kick of the sauce drizzled on top. The Rainbow roll was stunning, an assortment of layers ranging from fresh prawn, avocado to salmon wrapped over a crab and cucumber roll.
Needless to say I was thoroughly delighted with my sushi feast that day... I may have gone back again... to be honest, I clocked up some real loyalty card points in the space of three days. Dare I say the best sushi I have had, and at reasonable price too! So, if you're in Sheffield, and eager for some quality sushi, definitely head to the lane and hit up Edo Sushi.
