"Oh, the weather outside is frightful..."

Someone seems to have misinformed storm Desmond 'n' all friends that it's December, and that Christmas is coming... going by the blustery winds and pelting rain outside, it would appear that chances of a white December might be blowing away. But sure, keep your mittens and gloves crossed anyway.

I'm pretty much a sucker for anything that says "Christmas", and when you through in a market too - right there, I'm sold. I am going.

Where:

Sunday December 13th - Smithfield Christmas Market Fair

The Generator, Smithfield, Dublin.

About a fortnight ago Smithfield commenced the countdown to Christmas with a celebration event in the square, with The Generator Hostel holding an indoor Christmas market. This weekend December Sunday 13th they're holding another Smithfield Christmas market fair - "Over 40 stalls of fantastic Christmas crafts, gifts, stocking fillers, Dublin's best vintage sellers, vinyls records, and lots more so look no further! Live music, Christmas carol singers, Artisan food, lots of seasonal drinks on offer."

On what was another blustery night, the indoor market was a welcome sight at the start of the month. The place was filled with stalls pitching numerous crafts and potential gifts with a certain Christmas theme. Particularly packed with people for a Thursday night, the atmosphere was good with people surveying things on offer, floating around the foyer, and enjoying a drink or two with friends. Not your quintessential christmas market but more of vintage and craft-traders fair. Out in the square a decent stage was set with performances from Paddy Casey and The Original Rudeboys entertaining the crowd young and old, while snowmen and angels danced about the place. The glow of lights and sparkle of the tree giving the first taste of Christmas. The appearance of a real-life Rudolph kitted out with lights and a sleigh making the night extra special for the little ones.. and for me too, not gonna lie. Adorable little thing, wearing a christmas jumper and all (I say "jumper", it was more like coat..) to keep it snuggled and warm. Pretty magic.

Nice little things:

There's plenty of crafty things on offer, much of which is predominantly Irish designed.

One particular stall called 'Paperbear' offer some pretty neat pop-up christmas cards from Santa's decked out sleigh to decorated trees, to seasons greetings including a special Dublin scene sending dear Christmas wishes. The cards are cleverly designed and intrically made together. Definitely worth a look if you're wanting a card to stand out on the mantelpiece!

'Stencilize', the brain child of Aoife Hanrahan, caught my eye with their striking animal graphics. Printed jumpers, t-shirts and even baby-wear make wearing an image of an antelope look pretty cool. With a collection as vast as a zoo you might find a mug or a print for someone and their spirit animal.

If the opening event was anything to go by, this weekend's fair should be a good spot to pick up some quirky gifts or to just simply enjoy a bit of Christmassy feel. Enjoy having a gander around the place, sip on some mulled wine and listen to some live music on the day. If you're planning on heading down you can also look forward to a screening of 'Miracle on 34th street' at 2pm. Grab the luas straight to the square, make a day of it. Two weeks 'til Christmas!
